As dawn breaks, a male Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise spreads his wings and calls from his favorite display perch in the swamp forest of Nimbokrang.  Papua, Indonesia.

The Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise sports some of the most outlandish feathers in the entire bird-of-paradise family, which is saying quite a lot.  The twelve twisted wire-like feathers that protrude from the rear end of the male are extraordinary.  Every morning at dawn, male Twelve-wires go to their chosen display pole and begin to call in the hopes of attracting a female.  They live in lowland swamp forests, where it is very humid, and as the nighttime chill fades, the mornings are often shrouded in mist, as was the morning I made this image from my tree top platform.  I framed the shot to include an arching tendril of rattan vine, a classic plant of the swamp forest, and wide enough to capture the forest atmosphere that morning.  Wings raised, mouth agape showing its bright green interior, I feel this image captures that sense of mystery and awe that for me surrounds these wondrous birds.  I think it has a sense of timelessness.  These birds have been doing this for millennia.
